Amazon's Print Was Not Just a Beat. It Was an AI Infrastructure Report.

AWS grew about 37%. AI and custom chips each cleared a $25 billion run rate. Free cash flow went negative on the spend. Friday is about which half of that story the tape believes.

The scoreboard after the bell

Amazon reported second-quarter revenue of about $200.6 billion and EPS of $5.75. Street marks were near $197 billion and roughly $1.82 a share, so the headline beat is not subtle.

The growth engine that matters for Friday is cloud. AWS generated about $42.2 billion in the quarter, ahead of a roughly $40 billion expectation. CEO Andy Jassy said AWS grew about 36.7% year over year, the fastest pace in 18 quarters. Advertising rose about 26%. North America net sales were about $116.1 billion.

Then the part AI bulls will screenshot: Amazon said its AI and chips businesses each eclipsed annual run rates of more than $25 billion.

The other half of the print

Free cash flow fell to about negative $7.6 billion, a sharp drop as the company keeps pouring money into capacity. Capex was lifted toward about $205 billion for the year. That is the same family of number that spooked desks on other megacap prints this week. Amazon is telling you demand is real and the bill is real.

After hours, the stock jumped hard. Reports put the surge near 9% to as much as the mid-teens at the peak. That is the market pricing AWS acceleration first and cash burn second. Friday's cash open decides whether that ranking holds.

How to score Friday without joining the stadium fight

  1. Do not treat the EPS print as the whole story. One-time items can fatten a bottom line. Score AWS growth, AI and chip run rates, and the free-cash-flow path.
  2. Watch the peers, not just AMZN. If Amazon is green while other AI spenders stay soft, the tape is picking winners inside the theme. If the whole complex lifts on Amazon alone, that is a different read.
  3. Keep the 10-year and the dollar on the same screen. A strong cloud print does not cancel a hawkish Fed split from Wednesday. Rates still set the multiple.

Pocket change

Thursday night handed bulls a clean AWS acceleration story and bears a clean cash-flow bill. Friday is not "Amazon good or bad." It is which half of the report becomes the market's working assumption into the weekend.
