Court Blocks Overseas Drug Imports
A new court decision impacts how certain medicines reach patients, changing rules for drug imports from other countries.
A big court ruling just came down. It changes how some important drugs get to people who need them. A U.S. appeals court said companies cannot bring in certain medicines from overseas. These medicines are made by Gilead Sciences.
Some groups, called alternative funding programs, used to buy these drugs from other countries. They offered the medicines to patients, often at a lower cost. But Gilead Sciences sued these programs. Gilead said these imports were not allowed.
The court sided with Gilead. This means those programs can no longer bring in Gilead's drugs from outside the U.S. This decision affects how patients get their prescriptions and could change drug access for some. It also shows courts protect drug companies' rights.
