Friday's Tape Is a Split Screen: Amazon Up, Apple Down, Labor Costs at 8:30.
Overnight megacap earnings did not give one tech answer. Amazon's cloud print and Apple's guide collide with Employment Cost Index and late-week risk. Here is the Friday checklist.
One theme, two verdicts
After the bell Thursday, Amazon and Apple did not rhyme.
Amazon handed the market faster AWS growth, AI and chip run rates above $25 billion each, and a stock that ripped higher on the print. Apple handed a solid quarter, then a soft guide tied to supply constraints, and a stock that sold off hard after hours.
That is a split screen into Friday's cash open. Not "risk on" or "risk off." Winner-picking inside megacap tech while the calendar still has macro on it.
The data still matters
Friday, July 31 brings the Employment Cost Index for the second quarter at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Consensus has been near a 0.8% rise after a prior 0.9%. Later prints on the day include Chicago PMI and the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment number.
ECI is not payrolls. It is a cleaner read on how fast labor costs are still climbing. After a 9-3 Fed hold with three hike dissents on Wednesday, sticky wage inflation is the kind of number that can re-open the hawk argument even if stocks want to celebrate Amazon.
A simple Friday checklist
- Open the two names as a pair. If Amazon holds a big gap and Apple stabilizes, the tape is sorting AI infrastructure versus hardware friction. If both fade, Thursday night was just noise.
- Read ECI before you crown the earnings winners. A hot labor-cost print plus a hawkish Fed split is a rates story first.
- Watch breadth under the headlines. Can equal-weight and the average stock participate, or is Friday another VIP rope line for a handful of megacaps?
- Mind the weekend. Late-July Fridays love unfinished arguments. Size the debate you are willing to hold into Saturday.
Pocket change
The market got two megacap answers and one labor-cost exam on the same morning. The loose change is not a single index level. It is whether Friday prices Amazon's AI buildout, Apple's supply snag, and the Fed's inflation worry as one story or three.
