July Chopped the Chip Trade. Monday Opens With a Scoreboard, Not a Slogan.
The SOX spent July giving back a historic first-half run. Friday left Nasdaq soft again while the Dow tried to stabilize. Here is the weekend checklist before cash opens Monday.
The month, not the minute
Semiconductors did not have a quiet July. After a first half that looked unstoppable, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index spent the month handing back a chunk of that run. By mid-month the complex was deep into double-digit drawdowns from the June peak. A basket of crowded AI and memory names printed July losses of 25% or more on the way down.
Friday did not rewrite the story. The Dow tried to firm. The S&P barely moved. Nasdaq and the Russell still leaked as investors kept arguing with big-tech capital budgets. That is a weekend scoreboard worth marking before anyone invents a clean narrative for Monday.
What actually broke
This was not a single ticker tantrum. It was a regime fight:
- Spend versus patience. Alphabet, Tesla, and peers already taught the tape that higher capex can get punished when the multiple wants proof, not press releases.
- Crowding. Names that doubled on AI certainty became the easiest things to sell when oil, rates, and geopolitics raised the discount rate.
- Breadth. Energy and value pockets did work while the semiconductor complex ate the pain. Indexes can look fine while your AI sleeve is not.
If your July P&L lived inside chips, the loose change is admitting the crowded trade got marked. If you stayed diversified, the loose change is not rushing to hero-buy every red semiconductor candle because a cable guest said the cycle is over.
Weekend process for Monday
Mark three levels before futures start talking:
- Where SOX and your core chip names closed relative to the July low and the 50-day.
- Whether energy strength still shows up if oil cools over the weekend.
- Whether megacap capex language is still the punchline, or if the market is ready to grade execution again.
A bounce that only the most beaten names feel is a short-covering day. A bounce that brings equipment, foundry, and memory along with the index is a different animal.
Pocket change
July chopped the easy AI certainty trade. Monday does not need a slogan. It needs a scoreboard: levels, breadth, and whether the selloff is still about one crowded sleeve or starting to infect everything that needs a low discount rate.
