Millions Face Student Loan Default

Student loan defaults rise as payment pauses end, affecting millions of borrowers nationwide.

Many Americans with student loans now face a difficult situation. About one in five borrowers are now in default. This means 9.5 million people have not made their loan payments. These borrowers collectively owe $233.3 billion.

The government paused student loan payments during the pandemic. That pause ended recently. A program designed to help borrowers, the SAVE Plan, also stopped. These changes leave many people struggling to pay their loans.

Without these programs, more borrowers fell behind. The number of defaults grew quickly. This trend shows a big problem for personal finances across the country.

Borrowers need to understand their options. They should contact their loan servicers. They can explore new payment plans or other ways to avoid default.
