Millions Face Student Loan Default

Student loan defaults rise to nearly 10 million borrowers, totaling hundreds of billions in unpaid debt.

Many student loan borrowers now face tough financial times. Almost 10 million people defaulted on their student loans. This means 1 in 5 borrowers are not making payments. The total unpaid debt is roughly $233 billion. These numbers grew fast after payment pauses ended.

Originally, the government paused student loan payments during the pandemic. This pause gave many borrowers a break. When the pause ended, payments restarted. Another program, the SAVE Plan, also stopped. This plan helped some borrowers with lower payments.

Now, without these programs, many struggle. They find it hard to afford their monthly payments. This situation impacts their credit scores and financial future. Borrowers should look for new repayment options. Talking to loan servicers can help avoid further problems.
