Salesforce Just Doubled Earnings With a $2.6 Billion Paper Gain
Salesforce raised guidance, launched Claudeforce with Anthropic, and booked a huge gain on its AI stake. The stock ripped. The kitchen question is how much of the boom is software, and how much is paper.
The number that made jaws drop
Salesforce reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of about $11.35 billion, up 11% year over year. Adjusted earnings came in at $5.90 a share. The stock jumped hard after the report, with gains that stacked into a multi-week rally measured in the double digits.
Buried in the celebration was a giant asterisk.
Salesforce holds a large stake in Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude. That stake produced a book gain of roughly $2.6 billion in the quarter. Strip the investment gain out, and adjusted earnings land closer to about $3.37 a share. Still growth. Not a clean "earnings doubled on software alone" story.
At the same time, Salesforce and Anthropic expanded their partnership under the name Claudeforce, plugging Claude into Salesforce tools for sales teams. Management also said AI products like Agentforce and Data 360 are approaching roughly $4 billion in combined annualized recurring revenue, growing more than 200% year over year. The company raised full-year revenue and earnings guidance.
So the week left two truths on the table: the AI software push is real, and a huge chunk of the headline profit was paper on an AI investment.
Why this is a Money Idea
Software stocks have been living under a cloud. Investors worry AI will eat old licenses. Salesforce just argued the opposite: AI can grow the platform and the partnership book.
Households and workers meet this story two ways. First, if your company runs Salesforce, Claudeforce is another AI layer sitting on the tools your sales team already uses. Second, if your portfolio owns big software or AI names, you need to know when a beat is product demand and when it is a mark-to-market gift.
Paper gains can reverse. Product revenue has to be renewed every year. Those are different kinds of money.
The plain read
Three kitchen questions worth keeping:
- How much of the beat survives without the Anthropic gain? The core business still grew. The double-your-EPS headline did not.
- Is Claudeforce a product customers will pay for, or a press-release plugin? Pilot today becomes revenue only if companies keep the seats.
- When software stocks rally this hard on AI news, what happens if the next quarter's investment line goes the other way? Paper cuts both directions.
No buy or sell call here. The story is the split between AI hype, AI product, and AI accounting.
Final Thoughts
Salesforce gave the market a raise, a new AI brand name, and a $2.6 billion reminder that not every dazzling earnings line is pure software cash. Read the receipt twice: once for the business, once for the paper.
