States Challenge Federal Prediction Market Rules

Most US states agree that federal regulators should not control sports prediction markets.

A big fight is brewing over new types of betting. Forty-four states told the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to back off from overseeing prediction markets. These states believe they, not the federal government, should decide rules for sports betting.

The CFTC wants to create new rules for prediction markets. These markets let people bet on future events, like sports outcomes. The states argue that current laws already cover sports betting. They say the federal agency has no place making new rules for it.

This dispute comes during a public comment period for the CFTC's proposed rules. The states sent a letter to make their views clear. They argue expanding federal power could create confusion. It might also make it harder for states to manage their own betting laws.

This debate matters for anyone interested in sports betting. It will decide who sets the rules for these growing markets. The outcome could change how people bet on games and other events in the future.
