US Oil Reserves Hit 40-Year Low

America's emergency oil supply now sits at its lowest level since 1983, raising concerns about future energy security.

The United States keeps a large amount of oil in underground caverns. This oil is for emergencies. It is called the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. This reserve recently dropped to its lowest point in 40 years. It now holds only 298.7 million barrels of oil.

The reserve lost 6.1 million barrels in just one week. This drop comes at a tough time. There are worries about oil supplies from the Middle East. Events in that region can make oil prices go up around the world.

Lower oil reserves mean less protection for the country. If a big problem stops oil flow, the US has less backup. This could lead to higher prices at the gas pump. It could also hurt businesses that need oil to operate.

Keeping enough oil in reserve is important for stability. The government aims to make sure there is always enough. This helps protect people from sudden energy shocks.
